Welcome to www.shelties.net. The sheltie originated on the Scottish mainland, where they were used for herding sheep. They were first recognized in the United States in 1911. The sheltie is often wrongfully called a miniature collie, because it closely resembles a collie. Shelties are very intelligent and train easily. They make wonderful companions and are loyal to their owners. They have a double coat, the long haired outer coat for warmth and repelling rain and water, and the soft undercoat for insulating the skin. The average height of the sheltie is 13-16 inches and the average weight is 16 lbs. Other breeds of dogs may also be found on this website.
